Mandatory Detention Policy Faces Criticism Over Indefinite Migrant Holds
In the wake of Donald Trump's second term as the President of the United States, ICE has built a massive detention center where more than 60,000 migrants are held in facilities managed by private contractors. While traditionally meant for criminals, most (over 70%) of detainees currently do not have criminal records. This policy is called "mandatory detention" and it seeks to hold migrants indefinitely without bail hearing to ensure that the detainees "self-deport." Several reports from migrant detention centers such as Dilley and Pearsall point out that migrants face harsh treatment; this includes bad food, poor quality drinking water, and verbal abuses from the guards. Despite the fact that children were supposed to be detained for only 20 days according to the court rules, documents reveal that almost 600 children stayed in the detention centers for more than 20 days in the span of two months.
